This Portland-based bunch of musical crusaders have previously been our Artist Of The Month, so that pretty much tells you all you need to know (if you’re a little slow on the uptake, we’re saying that they’re incredibly good). Their new album ‘White Lighter’ was released this week.
Hard to believe that - for a band who have been so restlessly prolific for the majority of their career – we’ve yet to experience the delights of a new Animal Collective album this decade. Their last effort was 2009’s astonishing Merriweather Post Pavillion – a critic’s favorite which saw them edging towards mainstream awareness. In typical contrary fashion, they then revealed that – just as they were on the cusp of greater success – they were thinking of calling it a day.
Thankfully this inclination to quit seems to have ebbed away – and the boys are back with a new double A-side single. ‘Honeycomb/Gotham’ will be available to buy from June 26th, but we’ve unearthed a sneak preview. It’s as close as you could get to ‘typical’ Animal Collective fare – a recognizable aesthetic (millennial Beach Boys) with a smattering of all-new experimentation.
In short – it’s Animal Collective, and you’re either going to love it or hate it. Take a listen:
To be brutally honest, Hot Chip don’t look like the kind of guys who can throw out earth-shaking, beat-driven dance anthems with ease. They kind of resemble the ‘hardcore’ faction of a high school AV Club. None of this, however, detracts from the fact that – since 2004 – they have been throwing out earth-shaking, beat-driven dance anthems with ease.
Here’s a couple of old reminders of how great they are:
And here’s an entirely new reminder of how great they are. The Chippers (as no-one has ever called them, or indeed should do) have got a new album in the pipeline. ‘In Our Heads’ is the follow-up to 2010’s ‘One Life Stand’, and is slated for release on the 11th June.
We know, we know, that’s a long way off. Stop biting your fingernails, though, and pass the time (well, a few minutes anyway) by checking out their new single ‘Night And Day’ below. Feel better now?
